Level I - Introduction to K9 Nosework Dogs have an amazing sense of smell and a natural desire to hunt. This class focuses on teaching you how to encourage and develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It’s a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy and to find out just how good is your dog’s nose. Level IIA - Introduction to odor This class advances the dog’s scent discrimination skills taught in level one. All dogs are taught to identify the same scent, a natural essential oil. Additionally, we introduce techniques and tactics for building better dog/handler teamwork. High food or toy motivation is benefical for this class. Level IIB - Expansion of Odor Obedience This class expands both the dog and handler's understanding of odor obedience. Searches will increase to outside and vehicle searches. Additional info... Each session last six weeks and space is limited to eight dogs in each. » Register Online or... » Download a registration form Nosework Requirements NW1 (Nose Work 1) requires one qualifying trial of 90 points minimum. Proficient in 1 odor (Odor #1: Birch); must have ORT on file with NCSWA Elements required: Drill (ORT for odor #1) (on leash) with no distracters Interior Building Search (on or off leash) No blank rooms Exterior Area Search (on leash) Vehicle Search (up to two vehicles, exterior only) (on leash) NW1 Requirements & Parameters: Alerts: Handler must call the alert, but a final response by the dog is not required. (i.e. handler may be able to identify an alert though the dog is not yet trained for a consistently clear indication such as a sit.) Sourcing: Handler must identify that the dog is in odor and at the source. If the dog?s alert is fringing but the handler can either identify the source correctly or clarify by successfully getting the dog to pin point it with a ?Show Me? or ?Target? type command, the minimum points will be awarded. A point deduction may be given however if the fringe is deemed excessive by the judge. Search Areas: The outdoor area should not be exceedingly large, (i.e. it may be the side of a building or parking lot area or small park.) Height of hides should be no more than four (4) feet high and no more than six (6) inches deep. NW2 (Nose Work 2) requires two qualifying trials of 95 points minimum. Proficient in 2 odors (Birch, Anise); must have ORT on file with NCSWA Elements required: Drill (ORT for odor #2) (on leash) with at least one distracter (i.e. food, toy, etc) Interior Building Search (on or off leash) Minimum Two interior rooms No blank rooms Exterior Area Search (on leash) Vehicle Search (up to three vehicles, exterior only) (on leash) NW2 Requirements & Parameters: Alerts: Handler must call the alert, and the handler must define a final response in advance. Dogs can have two ?final response behaviors?, i.e. sit for most hides, down for low hides, but the handler must identify this in advance of the area search. Sourcing: Handler must identify that the dog is in odor and at the source. If the dog?s alert is fringing but the handler can either identify the source correctly or clarify by successfully getting the dog to pin point it with a ?Show Me? or ?Target? type command, the minimum points will be awarded. A point deduction may be given however if the fringe is deemed excessive by the judge. One pass through. Interior Building Search (on or off leash) Multiple interior rooms Blank rooms Once handlers have cleared a room they may not return. Exterior Area Search (on leash) Vehicle Search (up to four vehicles, interior and exterior) (on and off leash) NW3 Requirements & Parameters: Alerts: Handler must call the alert, and a final response such as one of the following must be demonstrated (sit, down, bark, point/stare) the handler must define the alert in advance. Sourcing: Handler must identify that the dog is in odor and at the source. If the dog?s alert is fringing but the handler can either identify the source correctly or clarify by successfully getting the dog to pin point it with a ?Show Me? or ?Target? type command, the minimum points will be awarded. A point deduction may be given however if the fringe is deemed excessive by the judge.
