Scott Williams, Training Director
As he always says, dog training is both an art and a science. But for North Shore dog trainer Scott Williams, it is also a lifelong passion. As owner and primary trainer of Beyond the Leash dog training, Scott has helped over 1,000 clients better understand canine behavior, establish greater control of their dogs, increase their enjoyment of their dogs as companions, and more fully integrate their pets as members of their families.
A former Marine, Scott boasts a solid background in basic and advanced professional dog training, in terms of knowledge as well as hands-on handling experience. Prior to beginning his pet dog training business, Scott spent six years honing the fundamentals of dog training, studying first under well-known French trainer Philippe Belloni, and then expanding his knowledge in the training-club environment with the prestigious So Cal All Breed Ringers and legendary dog trainer Adrian Centeno of Mexico City.
But Scott doesn’t just train pets at a professional level. He is an award-winning competitive dog obedience trainer who has traveled the United States and France excelling in competitions that put a trainer’s skill to the ultimate test: teaching a dog to complete complex exercises and obey detailed commands with near-perfect precision and speed. As a further testament to his dog training and handling abilities, Scott's dogs have been recruited for television shows including the E! Channel's Scream Play and an upcoming documentary on the breeding of the English mastiff.
Building on his competitive obedience dog training skills, Scott is also a Certified French Ring Decoy and competes in protection-based dog sports as well as French Ring Sport (a fast-paced dog-and-handler sport, involving jumping, advanced obedience, speed, and courage). To this end, he has earned his credentials studying with some of the world’s most highly respected canine sport competitors, including Bart Bellon (a two-time Belgian Ring champion) and Ivan Balabanov (a Schutzhund champion).
In addition to sharpening his skills with obedience challenges, Scott is certified in pet first aid and CPR through Sunny Dog Ink. He is also a firm believer in continuing education and professional affiliation: He constantly expands his knowledge by attending a range of dog training seminars, and has recently become a Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) through the National Canine Scent Work Association (NCSWA); this association teaches nose work (a sport that develops dogs’ natural scenting abilities for exercise and mental/physical enhancement) to pet dogs from a working-dog perspective. Rounding out his professional dog training credentials, Scott is a member of the IACP (International Association of Canine Professionals), NARA (North American Ring Association), PSA (Protection Sports Association), APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) and Dogwise.
Scott resides in the North Shore area of Northeastern Massachusetts with his wife of 17 years, Cathi, and their three children, Nicholas, Alexander, and Katerina. Having raised a lifetime total of nine dogs, Scott is currently a proud papa of four, four-legged companions: Ginger, an English mastiff; Gigi, a Pomeranian; and Loco and Cane, Belgian Malinois.
